Movie Review-Coraline

Starring: Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders

The film succeeds in bringing author Neil Gaiman’s award-winning novella to life in a unique and beautiful fantasy world. This is topped by amazing stop-motion animation in full 3-D but unfortunately it doesn’t take full advantage of it.

Much of the movie is very slow and non-engaging while presenting the viewers with seemingly random scenes to showcase the stop-motion style. Although visually pleasing, the plot doesn’t develop till the final act and while we wait with slight boredom for that to occur, the comedic moments come off as unfunny and the dramatic moments without drama.

While this may seem like a movie for children, leave the little ones at home. Coraline presents viewers with several creepy moments and dark themes that can easily give nightmares. For the rest of you, this flick is worth seeing as a work of art.
