In Magazine began with a conversation in the fall of 2008 about creating a print publication that would exclusively highlight arts and culture in Southwestern Ontario, primarily the Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge area.
Despite the economic climate, the In Magazine team attempted to launch both a print and web version of their publication in the Spring of ’09, but without the capital to commit to creating a print magazine, it looked like the web version would have to suffice. A second attempt to create a print version also never came to fruition and by May 2009, in part because of various new projects and distractions, the further development of In Magazine was put on hiatus.
But in January 2010, the creators of In Magazine found their vision again. Now poised to develop (for the time being) as an e-zine, In Magazine has been reasserting itself as a destination for news, interviews and reviews about the arts in the Tri-Cities area.
So what is In Magazine? First of all, the “In” in In Magazine stands for “independent. As in the independent arts scene. It’s an internet magazine that’s dedicated exclusively to arts and culture coverage in Southwestern Ontario. Our focus is locally-based bands, filmmakers, and other artists that are doing good works and deserve to be recognized. We cover concerts, festivals, film screenings, and art shows, as well as interview bands, filmmakers, actors, and other artists that are plying their craft in our own backyard.
We also want to offer a stage for artists to promote themselves. We have an events calendar that’s free to use, and we have a very accessible volunteer writing staff that are, in many cases, artists themselves. We’re constantly on the look out for what’s new, what’s now and what’s happening, so if you’ve got something artsy going on, drop us a line. (To learn more about getting involved with In Magazine, visit the “Getting In” page.)
The goal with In Magazine is to produce an open and accessible forum for local artists to connect with a local audience and also for artists to be able to connect to each other. We hope you enjoy perusing this website today and we hope you come back in the days to come. At In Magazine, we’re all about arts and culture in Guelph, K-W, Cambridge, and Beyond. Enjoy with our compliments.
